sir,
51
6 January, 1939.
I am directed by Mr. Secretary MacDonald to
acknowledge the receipt of your letter
No.F.13474/10648/10 of the 22nd of December, 1938,
transmitting a copy of a telegram received from His
Majesty's Ambassador in Tokyo referring to the seizure
by the Japanese of British owned rolling stock of the
Canton-Kowloon Railway.
2. I am to state that Mr. MacDonald understands
the present situation to be that, as a result of the
suggestion (contained in your letter to this Department
of the 25th of March, 1938, and the Foreign Office
telegram No.294 to Shanghai) to the effect that the
British authorities in Hong Kong might arrange with the
Chinese authorities in Canton for the storage in
Kowloon of the movable property of the Chinese Section
of the Railway in the interests of the railway bond-
holders, a certain amount of such property is at present
THE UNDER SECRETARY OF STATE,
FOREIGN OFFICE.
